Greening the Faith

recycling_logo50pc.jpgChoosing to recycle empty cans, use compact fluorescent lighting and adopt similar household lifestyle underscores a deeper personal commitment. Faith, smaller than a mustard seed, is a foundational catalyst behind changing our behavior. Social responsibility to be good stewards of the land manifests individually first to join a growing movement the world over. Governments and international business have dramatically stepped up efforts to preserve what is left of the natural environment. Only on a personal level, through single relationship with chosen faith can we hope to acknowledge omnipotence. Judeo-Christianity provides scriptural support for the eco-revolution. The Word grants humanity dominion over the earth in early calendar history.

Genesis 1:28
 "...Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and
 over every living creature that moves on the ground." (NIV)

People once classified as tree huggers and animal rights activists graciously sacrificed to build environmentalism.  The school of hard knocks has taught penalties for the gross misdeeds of over use and pollution. Isaiah harkens the final destruction caused by impending global warming.

Isaiah 24:5-6
“The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant.
Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt.  Therefore earth's inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left.” (NIV)

Recognize the spiritual backdrop for good business practices. A covenant relationship exits between buyer, seller and the man upstairs. Financial motivation is the way to abate the staggering global debt load.  Whale oil was the only fuel available for oil lamps back in the 19th century. Increasing demand drove prices up and whale populations down. In some respects, the whales have never fully recovered. Scientists soon discovered they could refine crude oil into kerosene. Kerosene was cheaper to produce on a mass scale, so it replaced whale oil as the mainstay fuel for lamps. Further refinements led to gasoline.  The quest for oil soon developed to power automobiles and everything else. Accumulating world energy debt in ecological terms continues to generate tremendous wealth for oil and coal companies. Mother Nature forces adherence.

Deuteronomy 8:18
“But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth,
and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.” (NIV)

The collective green marketing industry is obliged to offer hope via urgent corrections. Candidly said, the entire world is guilty of eco-sin. We have borrowed natural resources for many generations to come. Sales associates involved with environmental science and organic products are wise to first make the buy/sell proposition palatable and then explore the customer’s desire to seek carbon redemption. Every pound of carbon emissions saved unloads global debt a little. The green supply chain is an opportunity to enjoy creating wealth for ourselves and serve others.

Romans 13:8
